Name: Tom Browne

Education: Doctor of Education, Brigham Young University, Utah; Master of Arts in Education, University of Victoria; Higher Diploma in Education, University College, Galway, Ireland; Bachelor of Science, University, Galway, Ireland

Biography: Tom's experience includes thirty six years as a teacher and administrator in public and independent secondary schools in British Columbia, followed by nine years teaching and managing student teacher practica at the University of Victoria. His interests include all things related to the administration of public schools, most particularly school and community relations and supervision of instruction. When he is not working, he enjoys his family, gardening, fishing and watching rugby.

Name: Duane F. Schafer

Education: Ph.D. Educational Leadership, Gonzaga University (2002); MA Educational Administration, University of Akron (1982); BA English, University of Akron (1968)

Biography: Dr. Duane Schafer has been an educator since 1968, and he currently serves as the Superintendent of Schools in the Catholic Diocese of Spokane. Some of his prior experiences include middle school teacher, principal of Holy Family School (Grades 1-8) in Stow, OH, principal of Holy Spirit School (Grades K-8) in Columbus, OH, and principal of Holy Name of Jesus School (Grades Pre-K-8) in Indialantic, FL. His primary research has focused on the role(s) of the principal and the principal's relationship with her/his immediate supervisor.

Name: G.A. "Sandy" Dore

Education: BA (Honors) - University of British Columbia; MA - Gonzaga University (Curriculum and Instruction)

Biography: I began my adjunct position five years ago after 33 years of teaching and counseling in the public school system of Canada. My Master's Degree from Gonzaga was in the area of curriculum development from which I went on to write the Curriculum for Human Rights and Holocaust Education in the Province of British Columbia while being named by two Premiers of the Province to The Multiculturalism Advisory Council of British Columbia. I was the co-chair of the British Columbia Teachers Federation's first Social Justice Committee and various groups have honored me for my involvement in Social Justice and Anti-Racist work .Currently I am an adjunct for Gonzaga University in the Department of Educational Leadership. My interests revolve around the area of social justice and education and I am a very proud member of Washington's own International Giraffe Society (Whidbey Island) "For people who stick their necks out!"


Name: Janis Timm-Bottos

Education: Ph.D. American Studies / Cultural Studies, 2005 University of New Mexico Dissertation: "The Necessity of Public Homeplace in Urban Revitalization"; M.A. Education, Art Education/ Art Therapy, 1994 University of New Mexico; B.S. Physical Therapy, 1981 University of New Mexico; A.A. Allied Health, 1978 Essex Community College

Biography: Janis Timm-Bottos, PhD, PT, ATR-BC is an interdisciplinary scholar interested in the social and cultural determinants of health and the use of liberation arts to effect the absence of basic human rights. Her background as a pediatric physical therapist involved working with infants and young children and their families living in underfunded neighborhoods. As an art therapist and educator, she went on to work at leveling the playing field along with individuals and families living in poverty. She is a founder of ArtStreet, a program with Albuquerque Health Care for the Homeless and OFFCenter Community Arts Project (www.offcenterarts.org), a vibrant public homeplace in revitalizing downtown Albuquerque. She advocates in local and international venues for the return of small, welcoming, free community art studios located between neighborhoods. Janis currently lives with her family in Nelson, British Columbia, Canada and is initiating a new project called, "Kitchen Table Arts" in collaboration with the West Kootenay Women In Need Society.

Name: Gene Medina

Education: B.A. in History from St. Mary's College, Moraga, California,  M.A. in Social History from the University of the Pacific, Stockton, California and my Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Oregon.

Biography: As an educational leader and lifelong learner, several core leadership beliefs influence my thinking and doing:

  • It's about relationships building, asking good questions, listening and really hearing, being hard on problems and soft on people, and working together we create the future.

As teacher, curriculum director, staff developer, assistant superintendent, superintendent, and now, leadership coach and adjunct faculty member, I have spent the past 40 years exploring the processes of change and transitions for individuals, groups, schools, and school districts.  I am deeply facilitating the success for ALL learners, developing learning organizations and professional learning communities, helping facilitate processes of change and transition for individuals, groups and organizations and championing the role of education in creating our global future.

My experiences range from designing and implementing instructional programs and designing and facilitating leadership training to developing and implementing organizational interventions and facilitating group and community problem solving and dialogue about challenges they confront. Most recently I was Superintendent, North Kitsap School District and am currently a leadership coach for the Washington State Leadership Academy, district improvement facilitator for Aberdeen School District and on adjunct faculty @ Gonzaga teaching staff development.
