Editor Workshop
Editors for the Doctoral Program in Leadership Studies
All students working on dissertation proposal or dissertations are required to have their document edited by an editor who has been approved by the Doctoral Program. Before the proposal is distributed to the committee prior to the proposal defense the student will need to have a statement from their editor that it has been edited. Also before the dissertation is distributed to the committee prior to the signing of the dissertation the student will need to have a statement from their editor that it has been edited. In addition to regular editing with attention to format and APA, the editor must certify that the document has been reviewed against the "Check List for Academic Paper, Candidacy Paper, Dissertation Proposal, and Dissertation." The expense for editing is the responsibility of the students. Students can become approved editors for their own papers or to edit the papers of their classmates. See the link to Editors on the Doctoral website.

Becoming an Approved Editor
To be approved as an editor for the Doctoral Program, a person must demonstrate the ability to edit by editing a short (less than 1,200 words) but deliberately poorly done MS Word file called TestFileB.doc. The editor needs to ensure that the document follows the requirements of the APA Publication Manual (5th ed.) and the "Doctoral Program in Leadership Studies Guide to Style and Mechanics" (the Red Book) and conforms to the Paper Format (dated August 4, 2005). The editor certifies that the document has been checked against the "Check List for Academic Paper, Candidacy Paper, Dissertation Proposal, and Dissertation." The edited file is submitted as a file rename TestFileBEditedNAMEOFEDITOR.doc showing TrackChanges. Comments should be used to indicate where the author of the paper needs to provide additional information such as page numbers for references, information about publisher, needs to consider different word (WC), has gaps in the material (GAP), etc. The first step is to download TestFileA, practice with it, and compare it with TestFileAEdited. It is strongly recommended that anyone interested in being an approved editor attend the Template and Editing Workshop. TestFileB.doc can be requested from James Beebe. The edited file is returned to James Beebe along with a hard copy. Editors are request to also submit a short paragraph about their experience with academic papers and dissertation, information about their education, and full contact information.
Template and Editing Workshop
A follow-up workshop on the use of the template and editing for the Doctoral Program in Leadership Studies had been scheduled for Saturday, September 19. This has been rescheduled to Saturday, October 3 from 1:00 pm to about 4:00 pm, Rm 108 Tilford. This workshop will cover much of the material included in the June 27 workshop but with more focus on editing. Workshop participants will need to bring a laptop and must download from the Doctoral website (follow link to Current Students, and then to Writing Resources) (a) the MS Word file TestFileA.doc and (b) the template, DPLSpaper62.dot (or DPLSpaperTOCAbstract.dot). Students should bring to the workshop copies of the APA Publication Manual (5th ed. Or 6th ed.), Robert Perrin's Pocket Guide to APA Style, the "Doctoral Program in Leadership Studies Guide to Style and Mechanics" (the Red Book), "Paper Format" (dated August 4, 2005), and the "Check List for Academic Paper, Candidacy Paper, Dissertation Proposal, and Dissertation." Students may find it useful to experiment with making corrections to TestFileA.doc prior to the workshop. Students will be asked to make a voluntary contribution of at least $30 to the Emergency Fund for Doctoral Students unless they made a contribution to attend the June 27 workshop. To be approved as an editor for the Doctoral Program, after the workshop, students will need to edit TestFileB.doc and return it to the Program. My records indicate that three people have returned edited versions of the TestFileB. If you have not heard from me on the results and you sent an edited TestFileB, please send me an email. There is no advanced registration for the workshop.
