Gonzaga began its search for Father Spitzer’s replacement in the fall of 2008. Although the search has yet to bring forward a recommendation for Gonzaga’s next Jesuit president, Nelles said the search process will continue, and “We will take whatever time is necessary to identify, interview and appoint Father Spitzer’s successor.”

The Board of Trustees of Gonzaga University is currently engaged in the process of identifying potential candidates for the position of President of Gonzaga University, Spokane, Washington. This follows Fr. Robert Spitzer’s spring announcement of his decision to retire as President in July of 2009.
The Search Committee seeks in the ideal candidate a Jesuit priest who will possess the qualities necessary to lead the University, particularly as it relates to the support of its Jesuit, Catholic and humanistic Mission. The successful candidate will capably and enthusiastically implement the institution’s Strategic Plan and its high-quality academic, athletic, and co-curricular programs; he will actively promote a strong, positive and effective working relationship with the Board of Trustees; and he will actively work to engage the faculty, staff and administration to further advance the financial, fund-raising, and academic excellence of the institution. We seek a leader who can articulate an inspirational, yet realistic vision for the future of the University, one which will continue to define Gonzaga as a unique, high-quality learning environment that seeks to educate and develop the whole person for the common good.
The Search Committee will begin its review of applications or nominations on November 1, 2008. Applicants and/or nominations should include a letter of interest or nomination, a comprehensive curriculum vita, and the names of five references, and should be submitted electronically to the e-mail address below.
