Shaw Connection is a campus-based after school mentoring program designed to increase the self-esteem and academic success of 7th and 8th grade students at Shaw Middle School. From 3:30 to 5:30 every Wednesday afternoon, Shaw Middle School students join their Gonzaga mentor on Gonzaga's campus to participate in an educational tutoring activity, share a snack, and partake in a recreational activity together. Once a month, Shaw students also engage in a Saturday activity with their Gonzaga mentor such as ice skating, rock climbing, or visiting Greenbluff farms. Shaw Connection is a year-long commitment for GU students. In facilitating opportunities for Logan's at-risk youth to interact with college students, the program establishes successful relationships, provides opportunities for participation in varied academic, recreational, and social activities, and helps mentees to create a vision for their future. |

Shaw Connection is a year-long commitment for GU students. To establish sustainable relationships, we encourage mentors who are willing to continue in the program with their mentee for longer than one year to apply, but this is not a requirement. If you seek to create a difference for children, or love working with middle school students (or both!), please consider being a mentor with Shaw Connection. If you have any questions, we encourage you to visit us at the CCASL II Mentoring House on campus, located along DeSmet circle between Campion dorms and the Honors house, or contact Katie Kaiser at 509-313-6821 (ext. 6821), or Kaiser@gonzaga.edu. |
