Service-Learning Questions:
1. What is Service-Learning?

Service-Learning is a pedagogical method that engages students in organized service activities and guided reflection; the service activities benefits students and the community that they serve with and, in combination with reflection, enhance the academic curriculum of participating students. Service-learning is distinct from acts of charity because it is reciprocal; students, faculty, and community partners teach and learn through their interactions. Teaching and learning are informed by the realities of the world, and service is informed by theoretical and conceptual understanding. Visit our Service-Learning homepage here for more information.

2. What is the difference between co-curricular and service-learning?

Academic service-learning takes place as part of a course taught her at Gonzaga.  Instead of assigning another text to read, faculty decide to send students into the Spokane community to do service and critically reflect on the meaning and relationships of that service.  Co-curricular service is defined as service projects that students choose to do which is not a part of a course and they do not receive any form of academic credit for participation.

3. What is the difference between ServiceFest and the Service-Learning fair?

ServiceFest is an annual event every September that involves  a good majority of the non-profit community partners around Spokane coming to Gonzaga's campus and taking part in a resource fair for all Gonzaga community members to search out new opportunities to be involved in service around the community.  This event sometimes reaches almost 100 agencies and is hosted to benefit academic service-learning students and all students, faculty, and staff.   The service-learning fair happens every January at the beginning of spring semester and the target audience of this event are academic service-learning students.  For that reason approximately thirty to forty agencies come to campus to take part in this event.

4. How many faculty members teach Service-Learning courses?

During the 2006-2007 academic year there were 50 Gonzaga University faculty members teaching 69 service-learning courses.

5. Where do I find what Service-Learning classes are being offered?

Service Learning Courses are designated in the far right-hand column of Zagweb's listings of courses. You can also check the course list here.
