Reality Camp
So, what exactly is Reality Camp?
Reality Camp invites students to campus a week before orientation to participate in a 5-day long community building immersion program. You and approximately 39 of your fellow students will engage in various community service projects around Spokane. You will live, serve and reflect on your experiences together. This is a wonderful opportunity to create lasting friendships and develop strong bonds with the Gonzaga and Spokane communities!
Please note: Reality Camp is an experience based on simplicity and community. Our meals and accommodations will be intentionally modest, yet meaningful and fun. We will be staying on Gonzaga's campus with the exception of 2 nights off campus.
When is it?
Reality Camp runs Sunday through Thursday prior to Freshmen Orientation (August 21-25, 2011), with students will arriving between noon and 5pm on the 21st. Transportation from the Spokane airport will be provided. Regular orientation and move-in begins on Friday, August 27th, giving Reality Campers the priviledge of moving in early!
What will we be doing?
Reality Camp service involves a multitude of activities within Spokane's urban core and surrounding areas. A sample of past activities includes helping at a homeless shelter, working in a community garden, renovating a community center for individuals with disabilities, and much more! We will be participating in a morning and afternoon service project each day, allowing us to experience a variety of agencies and services Spokane has to offer. As a highlight, Wednesday night August 24th, we will have the opportunity to enjoy a homecooked meal as guests in the homes of Gonzaga staff and faculty!
An important aspect of the Reality Camp experience is the concept of living simply, in what we eat and in what we bring to the table. In this light we will be walking to most of our service sights and limiting the number of possessions we carry with us.
Who can participate?
All incoming freshmen are encouraged to participate. Registrations are taken on a first come, first serve basis.
What does it Cost?
