Celebrate Diversity and Justice

President Thayne McCulloh has declared the activities in support of social justice and inclusivity from Oct. 12 – Nov. 16 “a month of justice.” On Wed., Oct. 21, at 11:30 a.m., Dr. McCulloh invites all members of the community to meet at the St. Ignatius reflection pool in front of College Hall to briefly come together to focus on the value of every member of the Gonzaga community. Below are several other events in which we encourage your participation.



A History of LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) Images in the Media presented by Ann Ciasullo, assistant professor of English

Monday, October 11, 6-8p.m. in College Hall Room 245

Ciasullo will be displaying and discussing a diversity of historical LGBT images in media and how these images are perceived by audiences. Conversation and audience interaction will also be encouraged afterward.

A Vigil for a Better Future

Monday, October 11, 8:30-9:30 p.m., Crosby Student Center steps

LGBT youth are at increased risk of suicide due to bullying and harassment; a recent wave of suicides has touched the hearts and minds of many. The LGBT Resource Center will host a candlelight vigil to remember and recognize LGBT youth, who have committed suicide or may be contemplating it. This will serve as a chance to join in solidarity with the LGBT community, and hope for a better future where hate and discrimination are distant memories for all.

Safe Space Training

Tuesday, October 12, 3-5 p.m. in Crosby Student Center Road to Bali Room

The Safe Space Training is provided by Dr. Ellen Maccarone, Assistant Professor of Philosophy. It covers concepts and terms of importance to the campus LGBT community, and training culminates with a listing in the Ally Directory, Published Annually by the LGBT Resource Center. Take Action Against Hate Annual Banquet

Gonzaga Institute for Hate Studies presents the "Eva Lassman: Take Action Against Hate Award, Individual" to Gonzaga Associate Academic Vice President Raymond Reyes, Ph.D., a founding member of the Institute, at the Take Action Against Hate Annual Banquet.

Washington State Supreme Court Justices Forum

Wednesday, October 20, 1:10-2 p.m., 2:10-3 p.m., Jepson Center Wolff Auditorium

"Law as a Vocation: A Discussion with Washington State Supreme Court Justices," will be excellent opportunities for students and the public to see the justices and learn more about the state court system and the law, especially as a profession. The first forum, from 1:10-2 p.m., will be moderated by Gonzaga political science Professor Emerita Michael Leiserson. The second forum, from 2:10-3 p.m., will be moderated by Laura Brunell, associate professor of political science at Gonzaga.


Campus Climate Town Hall Meeting

Wednesday, October 20, 7:30 p.m., Cataldo Hall Globe Room

Gonzaga business faculty member Molly Pepper will conduct a Campus Climate Town Hall Meeting at 7:30 p.m. to explore issues of hate, discrimination and intolerance.


Washington State Supreme Court in session

Thursday, October 21, 9-10:30 a.m., 1:30-2:15 p.m., Law School's Barbieri Court Room

The Court will hear arguments in the following cases.
  • Case I. 9-9:40 a.m. Michaels v. CH2M Hill, Inc., No. 84168-3: Involves on-the-job injuries sustained at the City of Spokane's Wastewater Treatment Plant, and concerns whether professionals and employees are immune to actions against third persons (RCW 51.24.035) under the state workers' compensation statute.
  • Case II. 9:50-10:30 a.m. State v. Martin, No. 83709-1: Petitioner Timothy Martin asks the Court to review a Court of Appeals' decision affirming his conviction on three counts of first-degree kidnapping, and two counts of second-degree robbery.
  • Case III. 1:30-2:15 p.m. City of Seattle v. May, No. 83677-9.  The City of Seattle requests reversal of a decision by the King County Superior Court in the case City of Seattle v. May.

Campus Community event

Dr. McCulloh invites all members of the GU community to wear Gonzaga apparel on this day, and for those who are not in class and wish to join together -- not in a protest of the WBC, but in a witness for justice -- to gather at the reflecting pool of St. Ignatius to celebrate the human dignity and value of every human being. The daily Mass in the Student Chapel that follows at 12:10 will include prayers of thanksgiving for all those who work to eliminate injustice.


La Mission Film Viewing and Post Discussion with film Director, Peter Bratt

La Mission is a powerful film about family, redemption, and community. Che, the main character, is a highly respected man in the Mission barrio for his masculinity and strength and love for lowrider cars. A reformed inmate and recovering alcoholic, Che wants to turn his life around by raising his only son as a single father. However, Che is challenged when he learns about his son's sexual identity. In order to accept and love his son, Che will have to embrace a side of himself he has never shown. Film viewing and discussion with film director, Peter Bratt is FREE and open to the public.

United Nations International Day of Tolerance

The day is recognized around the world to affirm the on-going need to educate and raise awareness about the negative impact of intolerance, bias and various forms of hate.  The significance of the day from a global perspective reiterates the importance of respecting and recognizing the rights and beliefs of individuals who are often times marginalized.
