STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS

GONZAGA STUDENT BODY ASSOCIATION (GSBA)

GSBA provides a forum to bring leadership, justice, faith, service, and ethics together. Each undergraduate and graduate student is a member of the Gonzaga Student Body Association. We address a broad range of student initiatives and concerns, and work with the student body to produce solutions. We provide leadership for the development of the Gonzaga community through the sponsorship of clubs, activities, open forums, and student legislation.

Student government at Gonzaga is comprised of three branches:

The executive branch of GSBA is led by the student body president and a cabinet. Each class also elects a president and vice president who serve on the Executive Council along with other student leaders in GSBA and RHA. An executive staff of appointed students supports the organization and the student body, and coordinates the Gonzaga Activities Board.
The legislative branch is vested in the GSBA Senate. Twenty six representatives are elected to this continuous body in the fall, and they work to provide an open environment for students’ voices to be heard. The Senate debates important student-initiated legislation. The Senate also handles all issues ranging from money allocation and social justice to academics.
The Judicial Board is an active body of students who review the constitutionality of legislation, adjudicate disputes, provide educational information, and serve as a peer-review board in student conduct cases. Through each of these outlets, GSBA works closely with the Office of Student Life and the Office of Student Activities to provide opportunities for student involvement.

GSBA offers a variety of ways for students to be involved. These include active participation in the Senate, held each week, or through one of GSBA’s clubs and organizations. In addition to these opportunities, GSBA also coordinates input to the administration on behalf of the student body. Students are appointed to serve one-year terms on University committees which develop policy in academics, student life, athletics, and budgeting. All meetings of the student government are open and guests are always welcome.

GONZAGA ACTIVITIES BOARD (GAB)

The Gonzaga Activities Board is the programming arm of GSBA. It is comprised of five student chairpersons: Dances and Concerts, Coffeehouse, Performing Arts, Community Events, and the GAB Coordinator. In conjunction with the Office of Student Activities, GAB coordinates the planning and execution of all GSBA-sponsored events from Coffeehouses, to lectures, concerts, Aprilfest, and everything in between. The GAB board is dedicated to providing quality entertainment and educational opportunities for the Gonzaga student body. If you have suggestions for events or specific performers you would like to see on campus, please contact the appropriate GAB chairperson and let them know.

Below is a brief summary of the positions.

GAB Coordinator: Oversees the individual chairs and the programming budget.
Dances and Concert Chair: Responsible for booking and producing concerts and several dances on campus.
Coffeehouse Chair: Books a variety of talent for a weekly showcase, from student bands to professional comedians to open-mic nights.
Community Events Chair: Responsible for organizing a variety of events ranging from local recreational outings like ice-skating or movie nights.
Performing Arts Chair: Arranges various thought-provoking presentations such as visiting lecturers, cultural entertainment, and various unique performers.

RESIDENCE HALL ASSOCIATION (RHA)

The Residence Hall Association (RHA) is the student government for the entire Gonzaga Residence Hall system. It was established to promote the interests, needs, and concerns of residence hall students within the University community. The RHA supports residence hall living by functioning as a policy advisory committee to the Office of Housing and Residence Life, serving on social, and community building events providing the opportunity to develop individual leadership qualities, and upholding the values established in the University’s mission statement.

The RHA office is located in Twohy Hall for the 2007-2008 academic year.

STUDENT CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS

The Office of Student Activities, in conjunction with the SBA and GSBA’s Director of Clubs and Organizations oversees all student-run clubs, which wish to be recognized and funded by the University.

Information is also available from the Office of Student Activities at extension 6123. Gonzaga has several honor societies/fraternities. Please check with the Student Activities Office at extension 6123 or your department head for more information.

The Vice President for Student Life gives final approval for all student organizations. Any group interested in forming an organization can obtain detailed information from the Office of Student Activities. STUDENT PUBLICATIONS

The Office of Student Publications produces the following publications:

The Gonzaga Bulletin is the University’s weekly student newspaper. The Bulletin is published on Fridays during the school year. Send press releases and "letters to the editor" to bulletin@gonzaga.edu. For more information contact the advisors at extension 6748 or at extension 3899.
Charter is the journal of scholarship and opinion. The journal presents essays by students, faculty and alumni covering thought provoking topics in a wide variety of disciplines. Submission deadline is in February. For more information, call extension 5973.
Reflection is the annual journal of literary and visual arts. This journal contains poetry, fiction, art and photography by students, staff, faculty and alumni. Submission deadline is in February. For more information, call extension 6681.
Spires Yearbook is the annual publication that features student life during the academic year. Yearbooks are available to all full-time undergraduate students. For more information or to pick up a copy, call extension 6875.
Who’s Who is the undergraduate pictorial on-line campus telephone directory. Students may access the online student directory through their zagweb account. For more information call extension 6875.

Online Publications

The five publications are available on-line and you can view archived issues as well. The Gonzaga Bulletin can be viewed at www.gonzagabulletin.com.
