BASICS Brief Description:
Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students: A Harm Reduction Approach (BASICS) is designed for students who drink alcohol heavily or have experienced the negative consequences of alcohol-related problems. This is an evidence based model program that has demonstrated a reduction in drinking in college students who drink heavily. This program is provided by Student Wellness Resource Center in two small group sessions and includes web-based pre and follow-up assessments.
BASICS is designed to help students make less risky decisions about their use of alcohol. This approach uses Motivational Interviewing and includes being empathic, non-confrontational and non-judgmental. The effectiveness of this approach is that it engages students who would not normally consider changing their drinking behavior. BASICS supports students who abstain by recognizing their choice as the best way to avoid the negative consequences of drinking. This program encourages protective behaviors, and involves discussion of accidents, violence, sexual assault, sleep loss, and poor academic performance.
