Sister Outsider Poetry - Oct. 8, 2013 7:00pm - Wolff Auditorium Jepson

Dominique Christina and Denice Frohman perform, write, and facilitate poetry workshops focusing on identity, creative expression, and social justice, among other topics. Through spoken word they connect deeply personal stories to a diverse range of social and political issues. They write their "otherness" into the center and encourage others, particularly those in marginalized communities, to do the same. Inspired by the life and work of Audre Lorde, these two artists and educators, come together under one vision.

Dominique Christina is a writer, performer, educator, and activist. She holds three national titles in the three years she has been competing in slam, including the 2012 Women of the World Slam Champion and 2011 National Poetry Slam Champion. She is presently the only person to have held two national titles at one time. Her work is greatly influenced by her family's legacy in the Civil Rights Movement; her grandfather was a Hall of Famer in the Negro Leagues, while her aunt was one of the Little Rock Nine. She has always known she was a colored girl. Her writing is a celebration of that. 

Denice Frohman is an award-winning poet, lyricist, and educator, whose multi-cultural upbringing inspires her to explore the intersections of race, gender, sexuality, and the "in-between-ness" that exists in us all. She is the 2013 Women of the World Poetry Slam Champion, and a 2012 Leeway Transformation Award recipient. Her poem "Dear Straight People" went viral after being featured on Upworthy, and has over 300,000 views on Youtube. As a queer, mixed, latina woman from a multi-cultural background who pushes gender norms, her work is about claiming the power to wear multiple identities proudly, and to wear them however we wish. Her poetry is a celebration of difference, and centers around loving the parts of ourselves that do not fit neatly into dominant social categories.

Mass of Compassion - Oct. 3, 2013 9:00pm - St. Michael's Chapel in Kennedy (Boone Street side of Kennedy)

The Mass of Compassion is a mass specifically designed to reach out to all people of every sexual orientation and gender expression. It is a mass of love, friendship, sympathy, humility, and hope. During this mass, we will recognize the discrimination towards the LGBTQ community and create compassion for a better future. Please join the LGBT Resource Center, University Ministry, and HERO: A Gay-Straight Alliance at this community event. All religious affliations are welcome, as are all identitites, orientations, and expressions. The mass will be presided by Fr. Clancy.

Unlike more visible under-represented groups, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons cannot be readily identified. Likewise, there is no easy method of finding persons supportive of LGBT people. The Safe Space Program strives to provide a way for supportive persons within the University community to prominently identify themselves. The program advances Gonzaga University's goal of creating a campus community in which everyone is treated with respect and dignity. Everyone who completes Safe Space training and signs the Ally Pledge receives a Safe Space sign to display in their office, classroom, or residence hall room. Every time you see the Safe Space sign, you know allies are close by.

Gonzaga students, faculty, and staff are invited to the LGBT Resource Center's "Welcome to GU Social" for an afternoon of free pizza, friends, and fun. Help us welcome our new and returning students and meet the Resource Center's staff. Free pizza will be served from 4:00pm - 6:00pm on Friday September 13, 2013 at the Unity Multicultural Center (UMEC) located at 730 E. Boone (corner of Boone & Cincinnati). All are welcome!

Always Our Children Retreat: April 5 - 7, 2013

This weekend retreat is open to Gonzaga students who are part of the LGBTQA campus community. This retreat gives students an opportunity to ask questions, discuss issues, and listen to people's stories in a safe and open environment. This retreat is intended as a way to accept the gift of one's own sexuality and show that each individual is one of God's children.

Transgender Day of Remembrance - 11:00am-4:00pm November 20, 2012 - Crosby Student Center

Tuesday, November 20, 2012 is the 14th annual International Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR). This is an annual event to help bring about awareness, education, and support to the Transgender Community. TDOR is a day to memorialize those whose lives were lost due to anti-transgender fear and hatred. Around the world communities plan vigils to remember those who have died in the previous year. In hopes of bringing awareness to an often forgotten about community, The LGBT Resource Center will host a Transgender Day of Remembrance event at Gonzaga on November 20, 2012 in the Crosby Student Center. Staff and volunteers will be in Crosby from 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM to answer questions, provide information, and memorialize those who have lost their lives because of who they were. Please stop by our table and grab a ribbon and brochure, watch a video, read a poster, and show your support!

Topics will include the transitioning process, from both a theoretical and lived-experience perspective, general medical needs, and specific medical concerns of transgendered people. Charlene Strong: A Discussion on Marriage Equality - 7:00 pm October 29, 2012 - Gonzaga Law School Barbieri Courtroom

Charlene Strong is a nationally respected advocate for social justice and civil rights issues including marriage equality and non-discrimination policies. Charlene is the subject of the award-winning documentary, "for my wife..." which tells the story of how she turned her personal tragedy into a life mission to advocate for equality and social justice. Governor Christine Gregoire appointed Charlene to the prestigious Washington State Human Rights Commission; she is currently serving a new five-year term. Charlene's advocacy for equality has taken her to The White House for a private meeting with President Obama and other dignitaries to discuss marriage equality. She is a widely published writer and sought after speaker, presenting to universities, companies, public forums, nonprofits, and government agencies across the country including the CIA, the Washington State legislature, and the World Affairs Council.

Then join us on "National Coming Out Day" for an evening with Spokane's Transgendered Speaker's Bureau to learn more about what it means to be transgendered and ways to be an ally to this awesome community.
