Academic Service Learning

"Tell me and I forget, Teach me and I remember, Involve me and I learn."

-Benjamin Franklin

Welcome to Service-Learning!

Service-Learning is a pedagogical method that engages students in organized service activities and guided reflection; the service activities benefits students and the community that they serve with and, in combination with reflection, enhance the academic curriculum of participating students. Service-learning is distinct from acts of charity because it is reciprocal; students, faculty, and community partners teach and learn through their interactions. Teaching and learning are informed by the realities of the world, and service is informed by theoretical and conceptual understanding.

Listen to President Spitzer…

"At Gonzaga University, we do not simply believe, we know that any student engaged in Service-Learning will find a liberation of the heart…When integrated into our classrooms, we hope to bring about a life-transforming habit that students will carry into their future families and careers, so that they might always look for the common good for resolution of social problems and the challenges of everyday life. Service-Learning is an integral part to forming leaders for the common good."

-Father Robert J. Spitzer, S.J. President, Gonzaga University
