Opportunities for Students

Welcome! Here you'll find all the information you need to start volunteering at Gonzaga. Volunteer opportunities for current students have been divided into two categories: CCASL Programs and Community Programs. Under the CCASL Programs section you'll find information about programs held annually on Gonzaga's campus and directed by members of Gonzaga's Staff and Student community. Under the Community Programs section you'll find information about programs held in the greater Spokane community - some of which are actually branches of larger national organizations. You can also navigate through all our wonderful volunteer opportunities on our Projects A-Z page. Also, this page is updated often so come back and check out what's happening this week at CCASL or our current volunteer opportunities - where we post calls for volunteers when we or an organization in the community is in a pinch for volunteers. Good luck!

First, Maggie's Place provides for the immediate physical and emotional needs of our guests including shelter, food, clothing, and a supportive community. As such, we are a family and a community! In addition, Maggie's Place connects the mothers to the appropriate agencies and resources including prenatal care, health insurance, low-cost housing, and education programs. In doing so, we are supporting the mother in both her short-term and long-term goals. The Mary House is Maggie's Place's fourth home located in Coeur d'Alene. 12/1 Women's Hearth

Women's Hearth, a program of Transitions, is a day center located in downtown Spokane and predominantly serves women who are homeless, struggling with addiction and/or mental illness. Women's Hearth is committed to the arts and is devoted to promoting the women's artistic and creative talents. For many women, healing is realized through self-expression in the arts. Beginning in February 2008, we are planning to offer basic photography classes, once a week for a period of eight weeks, to culminate in an exhibit for a First Friday Visual Arts Tour in late spring 2008. Each class will be 1 to 1 1/2 hours long. Specific dates and times are still being determined, and we will be in touch as it gets closer to February.

We are looking for volunteers to teach or team-teach one or several classes on basic photography (framing, lighting, aperture, etc). There will be between 10 and 20 women in a class; we want to keep the classes small in size. Many of the women you will be working with have done very little photography, if any, so you do not have to be an expert to teach a class. The goal of our project is twofold: to give the women an opportunity to share their daily lives and experiences with others, and to build confidence in one's own beauty and creative talents. Each class will pair technical aspects (taught by you) with reflective themes (arranged and taught by Megan and Stephanie). Our photography project is based on such successful ventures as Kids with Cameras (which can be seen in the documentary Born into Brothels), Sixth Street Photography (a program in San Francisco committed to sharing the art and skills of photography with homeless and low-income adults and youth), and Seeing Beyond Sight (a book by Tony Deifell featuring the photographs of his students, who were blind). All of these programs used photography to teach both photographers and audiences new ways of seeing.
