Catholic Charities
Catholic Charities, Diocese of Spokane, began in 1912 when representatives from eight parishes came together “to do collectively what none could achieve alone.” The following year, a Constitution and By-laws were adopted fro this new organization that called itself the Catholic Social Betterment League. The goal for the League was to “assist families and individuals to self-support, to health, to better living and self-respect.”
The League, recognized in 1940, was licensed by the State of Washington to become what is known today as Catholic Charities. Today, Catholic Charities is the largest sectarian social service organization between Seattle and Minneapolis. Catholic Charities has 130 employees, and an annual budget of $4.1 million.
Catholic Charities provides services to people of all religious faiths in the 13 counties of Eastern Washington. More than 30 programs administered by Catholic Charities provide direct service, education and advocacy that respect life, promote self-sufficiency, support families, and assist parishes to fulfill the corporal works of mercy.
