CONNECT. SERVE. IMPACT Reality Camp runs Sunday through Thursday prior to Freshmen Orientation (August 25-29, 2012). Students are expected to arrive for registration between 1:00pm-4:00 pm on August 25th. Service immersion is an in depth, engaging learning experience. You will be living alongside 39 fellow students and 16 upperclassmen as you participate in various service projects in the Spokane community. The Reality Camp experience focuses on the concept of simple living, specifically our use of food, transportation, water, and technology. With this in mind, we will be walking to most of our service locations, eating a simple diet, and limiting our use of showers, phones, iPods and other electronic devices. You will be in a campus dorm room with other first year students with the exception of 2 nights off campus. Both nights off campus will be spent as an entire group with two local non profit agencies. Student leaders and CCASL staff will be present each evening. We need all participants to be in Spokane between 1:00pm -4:00pm on August the 25th. We will finish our activities in the afternoon Thursday the 29th in time for first-year orientation on the following day. For those students arriving at the airport, we will provide a shuttle between 11am-4pm on Sunday August 25th. If you arrive outside of this time frame, you may choose to hire a cab from the airport to arrive at the Gonzaga Campus. For those driving, we will give you further instructions as to the designated meet up point. Students can pick up their keys on August 25th between 9:00am to 12:00pm from their respective dorms. There are multiple options for arrival: you may either move into your dorm prior to Reality Camp on the 25th of August, August 29th from 3:00-4:00pm, or with the remainder of the incoming freshman class on the 30th of August. Students are responsible for their own accommodation on completion of Reality Camp for the evening of August the 29th. Orientation for parents is following Reality Camp on August 30th. To build community and lasting friendships amongst incoming first-year students through fun activities and service To raise awareness about social justice issues such as homelessness, poverty, and marginalization To engage with CCASL's non-profit community partners in Spokane To better understand GU's values of service with and for others To provide support for students to engage in transformative work and reflection |
