| UW Grant Gives GU Alliance a Chance to Educate Youth | ||||
|
John Caputo, professor of communication at Gonzaga University and director of the Northwest Alliance for Responsible Media (NW-ARM), was recently awarded a $15,000 grant from the University of Washington's Teen Futures Media Network. Teen Futures Media Network funds a program called "Take It Seriously: Abstinence & the Media," which focuses on the power that media images have to impact youth. The grant will allow NW-ARM to train local high school and college students regarding the power of media images to prepare for five lessons to be taught to junior high school students later in the year. "The TISAM curriculum offers an innovative approach to analyze sexual images and how those sexual images effect the health and well-being of our youth," said Caputo. NW-ARM was founded to promote and disseminate research on media effects and media literacy and to organize and educate the region about media literacy and media responsibility. NW-ARM is part of the master's program in Communication and Leadership Studies at GU. For more information about the program visit www.gonzaga.edu/coml. For more information please contact the Northwest Alliance for Responsible Media by e-mail at nw-arm@gonzaga.edu or by calling (509) 323-3578.
