'Should a Christian Be a Pacifist' Panel Nov. 11 at GU

A distinguished panel of Gonzaga University professors will address the question, "Should a Christian Be a Pacifist? Thoughts on Peace and Just-War Theory" from 4-5:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 11 in Room 101 of the Administration Building on the GU campus.

The event, which is free and open to the public, is presented by the Gonzaga Socratic Club. The panel includes Gonzaga philosophy faculty members Tom Jeannot and Doug Kries and GU religious studies Associate Professor Ron Large.

Jesus famously admonished his followers to "turn the other cheek" when treated with unjust violence (Matthew 5:39), but he also said: "Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword" (Matthew 10:34). Is Christianity essentially non-violent, even pacifist, or does Christian doctrine allow for the legitimate use of violence? Come learn how a Christian might wish to think about matters of war, violence, and peace.
