Gonzaga freshman Kayla Walsh enjoys everything about Ultimate Frisbee, especially reaching for the high tosses.

Gonzaga freshman Kayla Walsh traveled all the way from Andover, Mass., to attend Gonzaga. Although she flew more than 2,200 miles by herself, Walsh said she never felt alone because resting at the end of her long fingers was her trusty favorite Frisbee.

Walsh played on an Ultimate Frisbee team for the past two years at Andover High School and continues to whirl the aerodynamic dish on a women's club team affiliated with Gonzaga. She is always up for a pickup game with friends and plans to compete in Gonzaga intramurals this coming spring. The sport offers fun, exercise and even its own subculture.

“Wherever you go, the people are so nice,” Walsh said. “It’s competitive, but fun. That’s what I like about it.”

The game is similar to American football except the Frisbee subs for the football and tackling is a no-no.

The sport has grown rapidly in popularity and has become mainstream fun for many Gonzaga students. A flying Frisbee can be seen on campus almost any time and in any season. Pick-up games constantly break out on Mulligan and Jundt fields among students craving the fresh air and festive fun of Frisbee.

Gonzaga offers intramural Ultimate Frisbee teams for women and men as well as club teams that regularly compete in games and tournaments. Walsh, for one, is excited to continue the sport at Gonzaga and looks forward to all the Frisbee friends she will meet along the way.
