| GU Community to Form Human Chain for Tolerance | |||
The United Nations has so designated Nov. 16 to support and affirm the ongoing need to educate and raise awareness about the importance of tolerance and the negative impacts of intolerance, bias and various forms of hate. From a global perspective, the day reaffirms the importance of respecting and recognizing the rights and beliefs of individuals who are often times marginalized. The Gonzaga community will form the line of solidarity beginning at the Unity Multicultural Education Center (UMEC) at 709 E. Desmet Ave., and continue west past the Crosby Student Center to demonstrate the value of actively supporting inclusion at Gonzaga and in the greater Spokane area. Gonzaga Interim President Dr. Thayne McCulloh will speak on the steps of the Crosby Student Center at approximately 4:15 p.m. Local government officials and other community constituents are cordially invited to participate. The event, co-sponsored by Gonzaga’s Unity Multicultural Education Center and the Gonzaga Institute for Action against Hate, will end at approximately 4:30 p.m. For more information please contact Tracy Ellis-Ward, director of UMEC, at (509) 313-4108 or via e-mail at ; Jim Mohr, acting director of the Gonzaga Institute for Action Against Hate at 313-3665; or Kathy Casey, program assistant with UMEC, at 313-4105 or via e-mail. |
