Tracy Ellis-Ward, the former team captain and an All-America basketball player at University of Missouri, knows the value of teamwork and aims to collaborate in her role as director of Gonzaga’s Unity Multicultural Education Center.

Ellis-Ward brings more than 15 years of national and local leadership and mentorship experience to Gonzaga. She has advocated for diversity and first-generation students and performed ministerial work in both collegiate and professional athletics.

The Center, known widely as Unity House, offers resources and programs to enhance student learning and advance Gonzaga’s multicultural goals. Unity House supports Gonzaga’s institutional commitment to diversity and an inclusive campus climate.

Developing and cultivating methods to retain students and increase learning opportunities are important aspects of this job that excites Ellis-Ward, hired this summer.

“I am honored to be part of the Gonzaga community and look forward to serving in an environment that embraces diversity and is committed to addressing challenges collaboratively,” said Ellis-Ward, who held leadership roles for New York City’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Women’s National Basketball Association.

Also, she was the youngest and (at the time) the only African-American assistant athletic director at Michigan State University.

Ellis-Ward also helped manage Sports Leadership Ministries and women’s basketball at NBC Camps, both in Spokane. A native of Dayton, Ohio, she earned a master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University.
