| Don Hackney Sets Eyes on Alumni Reunion Oct. 23-25 | |||
|
Hackney, Gonzaga alumnus from the class of 1969, remembers the day as if it were yesterday. “I remember when I was 12 years old,” said Hackney, “when Father Dick Twohy came to Kennewick (Wash.) to say Mass at St. Joseph’s. I ran right up to him and said, ‘I am coming to Gonzaga’.” Hackney, who just completed four years as president of the Gonzaga Alumni Association, said there was never any question he would attend Gonzaga, even if he is still not sure why. “I had no Gonzaga connection, but I’ve changed that now. I married a Gonzaga gal (Sherie Henderson ’78), two of my children have graduated from Gonzaga, and the third is a senior here,” Hackney said proudly. And Hackneys have given to the annual fund ever since they graduated. Hackney has kept active ties with his alma mater over the years, too. After two years in the Army, he attended and graduated from GU Law School in 1974, and has been on its faculty ever since, trading adjunct for full-time professorial work in 2006. It’s understandable why this representative for the Class of ’69 has more classmates returning for the Alumni Reunion Oct. 23-25 than any other class, so far. His engagement is infectious. Reunion weekend takes on a new life this fall when it combines with Fall Family Weekend, when families of current students also return to campus. School is in full session, and numerous free events and activities are presented to welcome alumni and families back. The traditional Friday night socials for each class are still on tap, but Saturday’s lunch will be Oktoberfest on the Quad, with tents and heaters available if needed. An all-alumni dinner is scheduled for Saturday night. “The energy and vitality that the students create is important for our alumni to see,” said Alumni Director Bob Finn. “We’re always asked what student life is like today, and now alums will get a chance to see for themselves. They’ll also be surprised by all the new facilities we have that make this such a great place for students.” To register or learn more about the Reunion schedule, visit its Web site or contact the Alumni office at (509) 313-5999. |
