Orientation Targets World Record Dodge Ball Friday
Spokane is home to two of the world’s largest milk bottles, one of the world’s largest Radio Flyer wagons at Riverfront Park, and if Gonzaga University students have their way, it will soon be the site of the world’s largest dodge ball game. Gonzaga’s New Student Orientation Program will attempt to break the Guinness Book of World Records’ record for “Largest Dodge Ball Game” at 10 p.m., tomorrow (Friday), Aug. 28 on Mulligan Field, located on the east side of the Foley Center Library.

According to the Guinness Book, the current record stands at 120 people and was set March 19, 2009 in Portlethen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

“Gonzaga has a very unique Orientation program and community,” says Greg Anderson, activities manager for Gonzaga Orientation. “Our theme this year is ‘Be the Change’ so we wanted to do something different and exciting to set us apart as a community that can accomplish big goals together.”

The dodge ball game will be organized by the five members of Orientation Core and the leaders of Gonzaga’s intramural programs. The goal is to get at least 400 new students (mostly freshmen) to participate in the event, which will involve 200 dodge balls.

All 200 dodge balls purchased by Gonzaga Orientation will be donated to the Spokane Public School District after the event.

“We will have fun, give back to the Spokane community and instill in our new students the idea that, as a community, the Zags can do whatever we set our minds to,” said Orientation Coordinator Julia Esser. “No record is unbreakable, no task too great for the Bulldogs.”
