Gonzaga Interim President Thayne McCulloh has appointed two GU administrators to interim positions on his University Cabinet, effective today (July 15). Earl F. “Marty” Martin, dean of the Gonzaga School of Law for the past four years, is the new interim academic vice president, replacing Interim President McCulloh. Father Stephen Hess, S.J., becomes interim vice president for mission after serving as dean of students for student development here. He replaces Fr. Rick Ganz, S.J., also an interim.

Martin, who directed the recent overhaul of the Law School curriculum, will be Gonzaga’s chief academic officer, responsible for protecting and promoting academic quality throughout the University. He, along with the academic deans and department heads, will support and advocate for the academic life of Gonzaga. Martin graduated from the University of Kentucky College of Law in 1987, and served as an active duty and reserve judge advocate general officer in the U.S. Air Force, retiring in 2007. A search will proceed this summer for a permanent AVP.

Fr. Hess entered the Society of Jesus in 1982, was ordained in 1995, and holds a Ph.D. in higher education administration from Boston College. His experiences range from parish pastoral work in Portland to the Jesuit Refugee Service in East Africa. The vice president for mission is responsible for collaborating with the president, faculty, staff and administration to ensure that employees have opportunities for full participation in the Jesuit and Catholic mission of Gonzaga. The search for a new vice president for mission proceeds this fall.
