Alumni Reach out to Help New Orleans Sept. 20-26

Gonzaga is partnering again with Rebuilding Together to help assist those in need in the New Orleans area.
Gonzaga alumni are reaching out to help people in need once again.

The tradition of service continues Sept. 20-26 when the Gonzaga Alumni Association partners again with Rebuilding Together to help New Orleans residents still displaced by Hurricanes Rita and Katrina. Again, the group asks the Gonzaga family nationwide – alumni, faculty, staff, students and friends – for help. Alumni, you may work through your local chapters or independently.

In March, the Alumni Association and the Las Vegas Chapter partnered with Rebuilding Together, a national nonprofit organization, to help Vivian Beach, an elderly Las Vegas woman. The effort took place during the West Coast Conference basketball tournament. Dozens of volunteers helped in the spirit of Gonzaga’s mission by remodeling the 83-year-old blind woman’s kitchen. The Seattle and Dallas Chapters also partnered with Rebuilding Together as a total of nine alumni chapters completed service projects this year.

The New Orleans project fee is $250 – paid directly to Rebuilding Together. It covers a small portion of the cost to host each volunteer for a week in dormitory-style housing, three meals each day, shuttle service to and from the work site, accident insurance, safety gear and a T-shirt. Volunteers are responsible for transportation to New Orleans; once there, however, other expenses will be covered until departure. Participants are asked to arrive in New Orleans by 5 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 20 for orientation. The project will conclude late Friday, Sept. 25.
