Zag Fans Recover from Perilous Accident

Mary Sutherland and Ben Maixner
By Dale Goodwin
Mary Sutherland had to search long and hard to find tickets to the Zags’ first-round NCAA men’s basketball game in Portland. Her longtime boyfriend, Ben Maixner, was a lifetime Zag fan, having grown up in Spokane before moving to Los Angeles to pursue his acting career. Mary, who also had family connections in Spokane, finally found tickets and surprised Ben.

On their 800-mile trip from their L.A. home to Portland’s Rose Garden, a semi-trailer crossed the median and crashed head-on into Maixner’s car, sending both Ben and Mary to the hospital, Ben in very serious condition. Ben has been moved to Spokane to recuperate at his mother’s house, and Mary, who had less severe injuries, has joined him here.

"We caught all the Zag games in the California area, and were so glad to see the Zags show the heart and grit we’ve come to expect even after such a heartbreaking loss to UConn (in Battle in Seattle)," Ben said. "They got it together and made a proud finish in the Sweet Sixteen. We only wish we could have been there in person."

"They (Ben and Mary) received a letter from Coach Mark Few and they were thrilled," said longtime friend Chanel Dawnee. "They said it was extremely kind and it really lifted their spirits."

One Zag to two others.
