| GU Specialized Recreation to Present 'Jungle Book' | |
|
Thirty-five Gonzaga University students and 30 persons with developmental challenges will stage a production of “The Jungle Book” in the Cataldo Hall Globe Room at 6:30 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 7, and at 8 p.m., Monday, Dec. 8. Admission is a suggested donation of $5. The play, which is open to the public, is presented through Gonzaga University Specialized Recreation (GUSR), a program allied with Gonzaga’s Center for Community Action and Service-Learning (CCASL). GUSR has previously staged eight other dramas at Gonzaga. Former program Director Megan Drobnicki said she came up with the idea after attending a similar production in which her sister, who has Down syndrome, was involved. The mission of GUSR is to create an atmosphere where people of diverse backgrounds, abilities and ages feel welcome, respected and loved. The focus is on creating programs for both children and adults with developmental disabilities, a group that is under-represented at Gonzaga. The program’s goal is to create an environment that fosters the inclusion of all people. Gloria Havens, a GUSR participant playing the role of an elephant in this year’s production, admires the program. “I just like being around all the GU students, they are a great help and make us feel like we're a part of Gonzaga and help us feel like we're not handicapped, like we can get up and act, do anything,” she said. “They make me feel happy about being me.” Gonzaga senior and Program Coordinator Lon Manson said, “Anyone who appreciates Disney or a little pop culture will enjoy the show. Your attendance supports a good cause, and you will be sure to laugh your tail off.” For more information, contact program coordinator Katie Ulrickson at (509) 313-6832 or via e-mail .
