Debaters Capture Whitman College Tourney

The Gonzaga University debate team of freshman Paul Kanellopoulos, Mercer Island, Wash., and sophomore Jim Sydnor, Birmingham, Ala., defeated a Whitman College team to capture the championship at the final tournament of fall semester, held Nov. 22-23 at Whitman in Walla Walla, Wash.

Kanellopoulos and Sydnor advanced to the finals after defeating Idaho State University in the quarterfinals and top-seed Weber State in the semifinals of the Whitman November Policy Tournament. Kanellopoulos and Sydnor beat the Whitman team in a three-hour debate finale centering on the reform of the United States’ agriculture policy. The Whitman team they beat for the championship had defeated the other GU team of sophomores Leah Moczulski, from The Woodlands, Texas, and Karina Momary, Los Angeles, in the semifinals.

Gonzaga’s top teams took this last weekend off after competing the previous weekend at Wake Forest University, giving the Zags’ underclassmen the opportunity to compete. Twenty-four teams from nine universities across the West competed at the Whitman College tournament,.

The team will now regroup for the holidays and prepare for its spring schedule, which begins Jan. 3 at the University of Southern California.
