Farrell has interpreted Maurice’s essay about justice with a series of intaglio prints. Their combined efforts have been published in a slip-cased book, which is limited to a signed edition of 250 copies. Farrell is director of Gonzaga’s printmaking program. Maurice is a long-time member of the Gonzaga Law School faculty and teaches a seminar on justice and society.
A reception in the Chastek Library with the artist and the author, which is free and open to the public, will be held from 6-7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 19. The reception will be followed by a lecture from the author and artist.
Maurice and Farrell began collaborating on their book, “On Justice,” in 2002. Previously, Maurice had completed an essay by the same name.
“I have been composing portions of this essay in my mind for the better part of 20 years,” Maurice said. “What I have attempted to do is present my ideas in a straight-forward, readable manner using everyday language.”
When Maurice gave Farrell a copy of the essay’s final draft, Farrell began to mentally connect images to the text. After discussing the essay and Farrell’s ideas, Maurice proposed a joint project. Farrell agreed and the essay and illustrations were fused.
“The prints tell the story of justice with the flair of metaphor making its own unique statement,” Farrell said of her contribution to the book. The completed book contains 13 intaglio prints by Farrell. In addition to the published book, Farrell made an edition of 40 prints of each of the 13 prints appearing in the book (for a total of 520). Ten prints of this edition will be available for purchase and the remaining 30 prints will be sold as a set along with a copy of the book.
