University to Explore Culture of 'Hooking Up'

Gonzaga University’s office of sexual assault and harm prevention will sponsor a panel discussion titled, “Hooking Up: Liberating or Desensitizing, Empowering or Devaluing — A Penetrating Look at Contemporary Campus Culture,” at 7 p.m., April 24 in the Foley Center Teleconference Room. Although the discussion targets the Gonzaga community, it is free and open to the public.

The panel discussion of contemporary “hook-up” culture will include representatives of the following perspectives regarding contemporary hook-up culture: student, feminist, victim’s advocate, theological, and medical. Panelists include GU students, faculty, staff and representatives from the Spokane community.
So far, the panelists include:

  • Rev. Michael Maher, S.J., chair and associate professor of history, and director of Catholic Studies at Gonzaga;
  • Laura Brunell, Gonzaga associate professor of political science;
  • Adam Shipman, director of advocacy and education for Lutheran Community Services in Spokane;
  • Jeff Conner, Gonzaga Law School Bar Association president;
  • Ben Folger, president of the Gonzaga Student Body Association;
  • Kassi Kain, chief judicial officer for GU undergraduate students;
  • Mary Sue Gorski, chair and assistant professor in Gonzaga’s nursing department.
