Japanese Folklore Explored in 'The Crane Wife'

The Gonzaga University theatre department will present Barbara Carlisle’s “The Crane Wife” at 7:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday, Feb. 1-2 and 8-9, in Russell Theatre, located at the east end of Gonzaga’s College Hall (formerly the Administration Building).

There will also be matinee performances of the play at 2 p.m., on consecutive Sundays, Feb. 3 and 10, also in Russell Theatre. Tickets for the production, which is open to the public, go on sale Monday, Jan. 21, and cost $6 for students, $8 for GU employees, $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 12 and younger.

Gonzaga’s family friendly production of “The Crane Wife” incorporates acting, puppetry, masks, a strong dance element, and an original musical score by GU student Jeff Rosick. Gonzaga’s Japanese Club also played a dynamic role in the preparation of the show, sharing information on traditional Japanese culture and storytelling.

“The Crane Wife” tells the story of Kokuro, a poor peasant whose kindness brings him great fortune. Overcome by greed, his actions cost him the most precious thing in his life. The play is “a hauntingly beautiful Japanese folktale of need, greed and awakenings,” according to director Suzanne Ostersmith.
