Duo in good conduct standing with Student Life

SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University director of athletics Mike Roth on Friday announced men's basketball players Josh Heytvelt and Theo Davis have been re-instated to the team effective immediately.

The announcement was made on the Gonzaga campus in an afternoon press conference.

Heytvelt, a 6-11 junior from Clarkston, Wash., and Davis, a 6-9 redshirt freshman from Brampton, Ontario, Canada, were suspended last Feb. 10 for violation of team policy. Heytvelt, who was averaging 15.5 ppg and a team-leading 7.7 rpg, was sidelined the final nine games of the regular and post season for the Bulldogs. Davis was redshirting at the time after having undergone shoulder surgery the previous October.

"Josh and Theo have done everything asked of them," Roth said of the decision to re-instate them to the team. "They are in good conduct standing with Student Life. This was not just an athletics decision, but a university decision. They have not been treated differently than other Gonzaga students in similar situations and in keeping with the Jesuit mission of providing a Jesuit, Catholic and humanistic education the division of Student Life has allowed them to continue that education."

Gonzaga head coach Mark Few said he is looking forward to putting this incident in the past and moving forward.

"We are glad this situation finally has some closure," Few said. "It is time now to put what has happened in the past and move ahead - as an institution, as a basketball family and, in the case of Josh and Theo, as individuals. Josh and Theo have learned from this situation and are ready to move ahead both on and off the court."

Heytvelt and Davis both expressed their regrets and apologized for their actions.

"I want to apologize to the community, my coaches and teammates, the University, my family and the fans of Gonzaga basketball about the event that happened last year. I am sincerely sorry," Heytvelt said. "I am very grateful for the support of the University, the basketball program, along with many people from the community, and my family for helping me through the last nine months. I am very blessed with the opportunity to come back and play basketball this year."

"I would like to take this time to apologize to Gonzaga University, my teammates, coaches, family, friends, and the Spokane community for my actions last winter and for bringing embarrassment to myself and the University," Davis said.

"I learned a lot from this whole experience, and I have been working very hard to get things right in my life. Fortunately, I am at a University and a part of a program that believes in giving a second chance. I am ready to put the past behind me and move forward in school and on the court. I am grateful for the opportunity to represent Gonzaga University in a positive way."
