Weigel to Discuss 'Courage to Be Catholic' Oct. 25

George Weigel
George Weigel will discuss “The Courage to be Catholic: John Paul II’s Challenge” in the inaugural Catholicism and Culture lecture series sponsored by Betty Wheeler at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 25, in the Globe Room of Cataldo Hall. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Weigel, a Roman Catholic theologian and senior fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center, is one of the United States’ leading commentators on issues of religion and public life. He is the author of the best-seller “Witness to Hope,” which many consider the definitive biography of Pope John Paul II, as well as several other works on religion and public life, including his four most recent “The Courage to Be Catholic: Crisis, Reform, and the Future of the Church”; “Letters to a Young Catholic”; “The Cube and the Cathedral: Europe, America, and Politics without God”; and “God’s Choice: Pope Benedict XVI and the Future of the Catholic Church.”

Weigel also serves on the editorial board of the journal First Things: The Journal of Religion, Culture, and Public Life and writes a weekly news column, “The Catholic Difference,” which is published in more than 60 newspapers throughout the United States. Weigel earned a master’s degree from the University of St. Michael’s College in Toronto, and has been awarded eight honorary doctorates and the papal cross “Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice.”
