Col. Gunn to Talk Guantanamo at Law School Oct. 4

Col. Will A. Gunn will discuss “Defending the Guantanamo Detainees: Courage, Public Service, and the Rule of Law” at Gonzaga University School of Law’s annual Luvera Lecture at 4 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 4, in the Barbieri Courtroom of the GU Law School.

Gunn, who holds a bachelor’s degree from the U.S. Air Force Academy and a law degree from Harvard Law School, is chief executive officer of the Boys and Girls Club of the Greater Washington, D.C. area. Prior to working with the Boys and Girls Club, he had a distinguished 25-year career with the U.S. Air Force.

During his military career, Gunn served as chief defense counsel for the Department of Defense Office of Military Commissions, where he directed the overall defense effort for detainees brought before military commissions at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He was executive officer of the Air Force Judge Advocate General (JAG). Gunn has a deep commitment to helping people. He has worked to bring more minority students to the U.S. Air Force Academy, has mentored young attorneys, and tutored and coached young people throughout his life.

The Paul N. and Lita Barnett Luvera Lecture in Law series was created by an endowment gift from the Luveras. Paul N. Luvera received a law degree from the GU Law School in 1959 and gave the first address of the series in 1990. Lita Barnett Luvera received a GU law degree in 1977. Paul and Lita have worked as partners in the Luvera Law Firm for more than 25 years. Lita is the managing partner of the firm that is devoted to representing plaintiffs in major damage cases.
