'Economics of Success for Children' Slated June 26

Richard Rothstein, research associate at the Economic Policy Institute, will discuss “The Economics of Success for Children,” from 7-9 p.m., Tuesday, June 26 at Gonzaga University Jepson Center’s Wolfe Auditorium. It is free and open to the public; RSVP required.

Gonzaga’s School of Education, in collaboration with several community partners, will sponsor the lecture. The Economic Policy Institute is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, Washington, D.C.-based think tank that seeks to broaden the public discourse about strategies to achieve a prosperous and fair economy.

Rothstein was the national education columnist for The New York Times f rom 1999 to 2002 and is the author of “ Class and Schools: Using Social, Economic and Educational Reform to Close the Black-White Achievement Gap” (Teachers College Press 2004). In addition, he authored “ The Way We Were? Myths and Realities of America's Students Achievement” (1998). His other recent books include “ The Charter School Dust-Up: Examining the Evidence on Enrollment and Achievement” (Rothstein co-authored in 2005); and “ All Else Equal: Are Public and Private Schools Different?” (Rothstein co-authored in 2003).

Earlier on June 26, Rothstein and Partners for Empowered Youth will present a symposium titled, “Community, Class and Schools” from 8 a.m.-3 p.m., in the Herak Club Room of the McCarthey Athletic Center at Gonzaga. That symposium also is free, although a RSVP is required. In the symposium, community agencies, local school administrators, and other community leaders are invited to explore issues of equity, poverty, economics and justice for all children in order to design collaborative programs and services for the future.
