GU Hosts African-American Graduation Event May 5

The 11th annual African-American Graduation Celebration for graduates from area high schools, colleges, universities, GED programs, and vocational schools will be held at Gonzaga University for the sixth consecutive year. Festivities this year will be held in the Globe Room of Cataldo Hall, from 1-3 p.m., Saturday, May 5. A reception, also in the Globe Room, will immediately follow the ceremony for graduates and their guests.

This event recognizes and celebrates the educational achievements of African-American students throughout Spokane. The celebration encompasses African and African-American ceremonial traditions including libations, traditional religious blessings, rites of passage and presentations of Kente strips. This year’s graduation speaker is Dr. Stephan Humphries, M.D., the medical director of Saint Luke’s Rehabilitation Institute in Spokane.

This event is hosted by the office of the president, Gonzaga University.  For more information please contact Bob Bartlett, GU director of intercultural education, at (509) 323-4108 or via cell phone at (509) 434-4665.
