The Northwest Alliance for Responsible Media & the Women’s Leadership Conference of the Inland Northwest will sponsor the conference “Surviving and Thriving” with keynote speaker Jean Kilbourne, Ph.D., from 7:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 18. Cost for the conference, to be held at the Spokane Community College Lair, is $35 for adults and $10 for students and includes lunch. Those wishing to register can visit http://www.gonzaga.edu/ce and click on “Women’s Leadership and Media Excellence Conference.” Kilbourne, whose keynote address is entitled “Deadly Persuasion: Advertising and Addiction,” will discuss the relationship of media images to actual problems in society, such as violence, sexual abuse of children, rape, sexual harassment, pornography, censorship, teenage pregnancy, addiction, and eating disorders. She also will explore, “What should we be asking regarding our own attitudes and actions that inadvertently perpetuate sexism and violence, and how can we work toward changing them?” The event will include three breakout sessions on media literacy and women’s leadership, as well as personal dialogue with conference presenters, a marketplace, and lunch and awards ceremony. GU Continuing Education clock hours are also available. Kilbourne, whose films, slide lectures and TV appearances have been widely acclaimed, is internationally recognized for her pioneering work focusing on alcohol and tobacco advertising and the images of women in advertising. She is the author of “Can’t Buy My Love: How Advertising Changes the Way We Think and Feel,” which won the Distinguished Publication Award from the Association for Women in Psychology in 2000. She also is well known for her award-winning documentaries “Killing Us Softly,” “Slim Hopes” and “Calling the Shots.” For more information, contact Tracy Struble with the Women’s Leadership Conference of the Inland Northwest at (509) 533-7030 or Don Kinsey with the Northwest Alliance for Responsible Media, located on the Gonzaga campus, at (509) 323-3578 |
