“A Peace Conference: Causes of Conflict, Conditions for Peace” March 30-31 at GU
Gonzaga University is sponsoring an essay contest open to all undergraduate college students in this area in conjunction with the upcoming event: “A Peace Conference: Causes of Conflict, Conditions for Peace” March 30-31 at Gonzaga. Essays must be submitted via e-mail to GU philosophy Assistant Professor Ellen Maccarone (maccarone@gonzaga.edu), by 5 p.m., Monday, March 5; or postmarked by March 5.
The essay topic is: “Our media often focus on a culture of violence. What resources do we have available (e.g., historical, philosophical, political, religious, legal, economic, etc.) to shift to a culture of peace? What do you envision for the future of nonviolence using these resources and why?” The essay should be 1,500-to-2,100 words in length or five to seven pages double-spaced. It must be adequately researched with a bibliography and proper citations according to standards of the Modern Language Association, American Psychological Association, or Chicago Manual of Style. The conference is open to all two- and four-year undergraduate students. There is no fee to enter. All entrants will receive a T-shirt, and winners will receive the following prizes: the first-place winner will receive a $150 cash certificate and a $100 GU Bookstore gift certificate; second-place winner will receive $50 in cash and a $100 GU Bookstore gift certificate; the third-place winner will receive a $100 gift certificate to the GU Bookstore; and two additional entrants will receive honorable mention and $50 gift certificates to the GU Bookstore.

All winners will have an opportunity to present their papers at the peace conference at Gonzaga. The conference is free and open to the public. Major sponsors of the conference are Gonzaga and the United States Institute of Peace. The keynote speaker will be USIP Senior Fellow Betty Begombe, “Uganda’s Woman of the Year” in 1994 for her work to end the Lord’s Resistance Army insurgency.
