| 'Mardis Nenno: Oriel' Art Exhibit Opens March 23 | ||
|
Nenno, a longtime Spokane resident earned a bachelor of fine arts degree from Montana State University and a master of fine arts degree from Washington State University. Last year she was an Artist-in-Residence at the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts in Helena, Mont. Her recent ceramic pieces, a series of ladder-like structures and window fragments, were created specifically for installation in the Arcade Gallery. Nenno typically uses simple, common objects — pillows, chairs, windows, sewing machine needles, and birds. In the pieces for “Oriel,” she employs earthenware and stoneware clays, soda firing, and multiple rounds in the kiln. The surfaces are developed using patinas, slips, vitreous engobes, and glazes to create a union between form and surface. Nenno has focused on sculptural clay work and taught at the college level for more than 20 years, including instructor positions at Whitworth College and Gonzaga. She currently teaches at Spokane Falls Community College. Her work has been exhibited in group shows in Kansas, Washington, Oregon, Montana and Idaho. She is represented by Lorinda Knight Gallery in Spokane. In addition to this exhibit, “Faith Ringgold” continues in the Jundt Galleries through April 4. The Jundt Art Museum is free and open to the public. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, and Saturday noon-4 p.m. The Museum is closed on Sundays and school holidays including April 14-17 and May 27-31. Summers hours, which begin June 1, are: Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; closed Sunday and Monday; closed July 4. For more information, contact Karen Kaiser at (509) 323-6613. |
