| Raymond Reyes to Speak Today at City Forum | |
|
Raymond Reyes (at left), associate mission vice president for intercultural relations at Gonzaga University, will speak on the topic, “ Near Nature, Near Perfect: Spokane’s Passion for the Possible” at 11:45 a.m., today, Wednesday, Jan. 17 at Spokane First Presbyterian Church ( 318 S. Cedar St.). The event is part of the Spokane City Forum speakers series. Fond of flying the kites of idealism and driving the nails of realism, Reyes, Ph.D., will examine how far “near” is in the promise or practice of Spokane’s community development slogan “near nature, near perfect.” In so doing, Reyes will address the notion that what we value is what we evaluate by offering an assessment of the “Four E’s” of sustainable, robust community development: Environment, Equity, Education and Economics. Reyes will propose a spiritual architecture for building our city’s common good around such tensions as economic competitiveness and environmental collaboration; ethnocentrism or ethno-relativism; living wage regulated business and market-defined unregulated business; educational uniformity without intellectual conformity. Reservations are required. Admission is $10, $5 for students, and includes lunch. Childcare is available by reservation at $4 per child. To make a reservation, call (509) 777-1555 or e-mail spokanecityforum@yahoo.com; or visit the Web site at www.spokanecityforum.org. Spokane City Forum is a community service of First Presbyterian Church. |
