'Take a Stand' Monologues to Examine Rape Dec. 2

Gonzaga University will present a series of monologues about rape that were written and performed by students in “Take a Stand: a Preview” at 7 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 2, in the Russell Theatre on the Gonzaga campus. The event is free and open to the public.

“Take a Stand: a Preview” is a shorter version of the “Take a Stand Against Sexual Violence” performance that Gonzaga students have staged at least once every year for more than five years. “Take a Stand” is a collection of monologues about rape, sexual assault, sexual abuse and how those experiences affected the writers. The stories are true but authors are anonymous.

“The stories are deeply personal to those who wrote them, but removing names and specific details leaves opportunity for the whole audience to connect with the true tragedy of the story, sexual violence,” said senior Kathryn Bassier, coordinator of “Take a Stand: a Preview.”

Between monologues, a slideshow of the most up-to-date statistics about rape and sexual assault will be shown as an educational tool. Also, there will be a sexual assault advocate present for those who wish to talk to someone about their reaction to these stories.
