'Robin Hood' to be Staged at GU Dec. 3-4

Thirty Gonzaga University students and 20 persons with developmental challenges will stage a production of “Robin Hood” in Cataldo Hall at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 3, and at 8 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 4. The cost is a suggested donation of $5.

The play, which is open to the public, is presented through Gonzaga University Specialized Recreation, a program allied with Gonzaga’s Center for Community Action and Service-Learning (CCASL).

GUSR has previously staged four other dramas at Gonzaga. Program Director Megan Drobnicki said she came up with the idea after attending a similar production in which her sister, who has Down syndrome, was involved.

The mission of GUSR is to create an atmosphere where people of diverse backgrounds, abilities, and ages feel welcome, respected and loved. The focus is on creating programs for both children and adults with developmental disabilities, a group that is underrepresented at Gonzaga. The program’s goal is to create an environment that fosters equality and inclusion of all people.

Matt Johnson, a GUSR participant, has the leading role of Robin Hood.

“GUSR is a good break from work. I love spending time with the coaches and participating in the fun activities,” he said. Volunteer Ross Beaulaurier, a GU junior, said the program has helped him learn how to “make a significant difference in the lives of others, just through giving my time.”
