Fall Wind Symphony Concert Nov. 16

The Gonzaga University Wind Symphony will perform with the Gonzaga Chamber Winds and Percussion Ensemble at The Met, 901 W. Sprague Ave., downtown Spokane, at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 16. The event, sponsored by the GU music department, is free and open to the public.

Led by conductor and composer Robert Spittal, associate professor of music at Gonzaga, the Wind Symphony is made up of woodwind, brass, and percussion instrumentalists from GU.

The concert will feature both world-renowned and new pieces, including “Sanctuary,” by Los Angeles-based composer Frank Tichelli, “Pacem — A Hymn for Peace,” by Spittal, and “March,” by Paul Hindemith.

The smaller, 10-piece Gonzaga Chamber Winds group will be play a modernist piece entitled “Sea Creatures,” by award-winning composer Daniel Kallman, a multi-movement piece depicting many different sea animals, including sharks, dolphins, and puffer fish.

The Wind Symphony and Chamber Winds also will be joined by the Percussion Ensemble, conducted by GU percussion instructor Daniel Cox.
