Scott to Discuss Preserving Wilderness Oct. 30

Doug Scott will discuss, “Preserving Our Enduring Wilderness: Success through Grassroots Citizens’ Activism” from 7-9 p.m., Monday, Oct. 30 in the Globe Room of Cataldo Hall at Gonzaga University. The event is free and open to the public.

Scott’s lecture is sponsored by the Campaign for America’s Wilderness, Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness, Conservation Northwest, the Sierra Club, the Spokane Mountaineers Conservation Committee; and, the following Gonzaga University entities: the Environmental Studies Program, the academic vice president’s office, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Center for Community Action and Service Learning (CCASL), and the political science department.

Scott, a renowned national authority on American wilderness, will address the meaning and importance of wilderness. His role in wilderness preservation spans more than four decades, beginning in college and including terms as conservation director for the Sierra Club, lobbyist for the Wilderness Society, and currently, as policy director for the Campaign for America’s Wilderness, a national organization that supports local citizen-driven wilderness proposals.

Also, he is among the founding members of Earth Day and has worked with many grassroots environmental campaigns. Scott authored the book, “The Enduring Wilderness: Protecting Our Natural Heritage through the Wilderness Act.”
