'Smallest Witnesses' Exhibit Coming to GU Nov. 10

The Gonzaga University Institute for Action Against Hate and the Gonzaga University student activities office are featuring the art exhibit, “Smallest Witnesses:The Crisis in Darfur through Children’s Eyes,” in the Crosby Student Center. The exhibit, which is free and open the public, begins Friday, Nov. 10 and runs until 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 12.

The exhibit, a collection of drawings by the refugee children of Darfur, will be accompanied by a speech from Whitworth College psychology Professor James Waller, and a dramatic performance titled "Darfur Strikes Back." Waller will discuss the genocide in Darfur in a lecture at the Crosby Student Center from 5-7 p.m., Nov. 10. His talk will be followed by a special musical performance by the local group Sidhe Duo. At 3 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 11, actors Silvia Lazo and Selena Schoepfer will perform the dramatic presentation “Darfur Strikes Forward" in the Russell Theatre located on the first floor of the GU Administration BuildingThe actors will be accompanied by the Malidoma African drumming ensemble and dance troupe.

The art exhibit “Smallest Witnesses” is a collection of drawings by the refugee children of Darfur. During a recent Human Rights Watch (HRW) mission to refugee camps along the Darfur-Chad border, HRW researchers gave children crayons and pens so they could draw while their families were interviewed. Without any prompting from the researchers, the children began drawing pictures of the many atrocities they had witnessed, including rape, murder, and bombings.
