Approximately 150 Gonzaga University students, faculty, staff and alumni will embark Friday, Sept. 22 on the 37th Pilgrimage to Cataldo Mission in North Idaho. The overnight, two-day trip follows the steps of Gonzaga’s founder – Jesuit missionary Rev. Joseph Cataldo, S.J. – along a remote stretch of the Coeur d’Alene River amid the beauty of Idaho’s forests and fields.

The group will be dropped off at the Bumblebee Cutoff near Kingston, Idaho, at approximately 6 p.m. on Friday (Sept. 22). The Pilgrims will hike 4 miles along the Coeur d’Alene River before pitching tents and gathering around a campfire for Christian fellowship and Pilgrimage Stew (at One Eye’s Landing Campground). A presentation of Jesuit history on the big screen and singing will cap the first day.

The following morning, Saturday (Sept. 23), the Pilgrims will arise to a hot breakfast at 7:30 a.m. and continue their 10-mile trek to Sacred Heart Mission Church in
Cataldo, the state’s oldest standing building, where 19th-century Jesuit missionaries established their headquarters and lived the Gospel they taught to others.

Along the way, Pilgrims will stop to enjoy the wonder of God’s creation, learn of those whose vision gave birth to Gonzaga, reflect on their place in that ongoing
pilgrimage and take turns carrying the Pilgrimage cross. The Pilgrimage ends

Saturday afternoon with Mass and prayers at Sacred Heart Mission Church.

Buses leave Friday, Sept. 22 at approximately 4:15 p.m. from the DeSmet circle in front of the Crosby Student Center and return to campus Saturday, at approximately 4:30 p.m. For more information, contact University Ministry at (509) 323-4242 or via e-mail at
