Gonzaga University’s top debate team of Charlie Hutchison and Nick Bormann advanced from the field of 64 teams to the field of 16 before losing Tuesday (April 4) to a Whitman College team at the Cross Examination Debate Association National Debate Tournament in Dallas.
The team of Hutchison, a senior from Tucson, Ariz., and Bormann, a sophomore from Spokane, entered the tournament with an at-large berth. Hutchison and Bormann staged a big upset Monday in the field of 64, beating a team from Emory University 2-1. The GU team then defeated a talented Wichita State team 2-1 to advance to the final 16 match against Whitman.
“We ran into a very good Whitman team this morning and we lost the battle for Northwest supremacy,” said Glen Frappier, Gonzaga’s debate coach. “The guys debated great and we’re ecstatic with a top 16 finish at the national tournament. It would have been nice to pull another upset, but we’re all really proud of the hard work and intensity the team put into preparing for our season finale.”
