The Gonzaga University men’s basketball team is not the university’s only squad headed into postseason play. Gonzaga’s debate team of senior Charlie Hutchison and sophomore Nick Bormann has earned an at-large berth into the National Debate Tournament. The entry marks the 19th straight year that Gonzaga has earned a berth into the National Debate Tournament.
Hutchison and Bormann advanced to the quarterfinals at the Northwest Cross Examination Debate Association Debate Championships held March 3-6 at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Wash., before they were defeated by Whitman. Hutchison was named the 8th best speaker at the regional tournament, while Bormann was honored as the 15th best. The two will represent the university at the national tournament to be held March 23-28 at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.
The Gonzaga men’s basketball team finds out this weekend, on Selection Sunday (March 12), where they will go and who they will play in the first round of the NCAA Tournament March 16-17.
Following the National Debate Tournament, the Gonzaga debaters will finish the season at the Cross Examination Debate Association National Tournament. Unlike the NDT which invites only the top 78 teams in the nation, CEDA Nationals is an open tournament and usually draws approximately 300 schools. Gonzaga will be represented by three teams at that tourney set for March 31-April 2 in Dallas.
