Staff Assembly Meeting Minutes
September 7, 2005
Sent to Staff-l on October 3, 2005
Items Discussed:
- Anniversary Gift Distribution: At the present time HR is sending out anniversary cards and Staff Assembly Reps are delivering the gift wallets to supervisors or staff. Two options are to have HR deliver both together (to supervisors?) or for Staff Assembly members to get the cards from HR and deliver them with the wallets. As Marcia said in her email to all staff the milestone gifts are back-ordered and will be distributed as soon as they arrive.
- Scheduling meetings with Committees to discuss roles and responsibilities: Job descriptions for each committee do exist and Krystal will get these out to executive committee members. Executive committee will work on redefining/updating them.
- Compensation consultant report follow up: Having met with Thayne Trevor concluded that among staff and the staff assembly the concept of “Pay for Performance†is a good idea. However there are many obstacles that need to be overcome before it can be fully implemented. The challenge now is to identify those obstacles and work through them one at a time which could be a very lengthy process. At this time “Pay for Performance†is off the table until some of these obstacles can be resolved. Suggestion was made that we explore a partnership with the School of Business – Human Resource faculty and students to help with a self-study. Good for us – experience for them.
- Increase staff involvement on Staff Assembly/ thoughts from meeting with Thayne: It was noted that perhaps we don’t adequately represent the wide range of diversity among staff at the university and that some staff may feel alienated, disengaged or disenfranchised from the Staff Assembly. How can we turn this around?
o Should we be more proactive in making sure the Executive Council has better representation from the different groups? Amend our structure? Is Exempt/Non-exempt adequate?
o Can we do a better job of inviting supervisors to planning sessions for such events as “Heads-Up
o Can we get agendas for our meetings out one week in advance so more staff might be interested and come?
o Can we do a better job of distributing our minutes?
