STAFF ASSEMBLY EXECUTIVE COUNCIL MINUTES

February 15, 2000

 LABOR DAY HOLIDAY:

Wayne Powel, Harry Sladich, and Linda Pierce were invited to attend this special meeting of the Staff Assembly Executive Council to discuss the present Labor Day holiday issue.  Harry explained that originally the Cabinet agreed with the change in the Labor Day holiday schedule.  After discussion with the Deans and Student Life, it was decided that it would be for the good of the students to stay with the initial date for the Labor Day holiday in order for students to get into a college routine and not disrupt their academic schedule.  It was also discussed that if the Labor Day holiday would change, students would not have a break for two months when they would then get Founder’s Day off in October.  Faculty addressed the issue of having too many Monday holidays, which is hard for students and faculty in regards to getting the adequate amount of class time in.

It was suggested that a compromise be reached in effect that the university will keep the initial Labor Day holiday, but allow staff the option to select (only with supervisor’s approval)  which holiday date they would like to take off. Supervisors and managers will be encouraged to allow as much flexibility as possible to the staff but yet keep adequate functionality within individual departments.  The Academic Council will look at the results of trying this holiday option.

Harry was given a draft of the memo explaining the Labor Day holiday change, written by Steve Doolittle. He will discuss this memo with Steve and work on changing the verbiage.

COMPENSATION SURVEY RESULTS TO STAFF:

Rosemarie was informed that there is a Cabinet meeting conflict with the dates previously selected to present the results of the Compensation Survey.  Rosemarie will contact Harry Sladich for approval to change the meeting dates to Tuesday, March 7, 2000, 7:00 A.M. to 9:00 A.M. and the second meeting to Wednesday, March 8, 2000, 10:00 A.M. to Noon. Rosemarie will also ask Harry or Fr. Spitzer if they would be able to give the opening address.
