Meeting called to order at 11:02am

 Thayne McCulloch's Address to the Staff

Jeff reminded the council that Dr. McCulloch will address the staff on the following morning, September 6th, and urged everyone to attend and to remind fellow staff members to attend.

FALL OPEN MEETING

Jeff proposed October 24th for the Fall Open Meeting and discussed the following proposed agenda:

  • Council Business
  • By law voting, etc.
  • Marty Martin - EVP (20mins)
  • Joe Poss - VP UR (20mins)
  • Sue Weitz - VP Student life (20mins)
  • Mission Awards and Retirements (thru December) - it has been decided that retirements will have to be self-reported in order to respect the privacy of staff members. Steve Allen will lead a committee with the goal of reviewing submissions and selecting mission award recipients for fall 2012.
  • Tradition Item - Speaker 30 mins?

BY-LAWS COMMITTEE UPDATE

Mike and Dave have met to discuss the current by-laws and changes that they foresee as being necessary to make the Staff Assembly a more nimble organization. For now the committee is open to suggestions from the council and will seek approval in moving forward. At the moment there is no official council plan for how the by-laws revision will be presented to staff or approved.

Action Item: Mike and Dave will present different options of by-laws drafts by October 3rd in the hopes that the by-laws issue can be brought up to the Staff body at the Fall Open Meeting.

BENEFITS COMMITTEE

Jeff advised that in his discussion with Mike Herzog, Mike was not aware of any changes to the tuition benefit plan; however he would look into it. He also confirmed that Gonzaga will follow law in regards to any changes concerning birth control but will maintain status quo on the issue until changes to law are made.

UPDATE FROM HR

HR has confirmed that Gonzaga has no formal pet policy regarding dogs in the classroom. Service animal status is to be determined by the DREAM Office.

REGENTS APPLICATIONS

Due date for Regent Applications has been extended to Monday, September 10th and applications are available through the Staff Assembly website.

BUDGET AND ACSS COMMITTEE REPRESENTATION

Budget and ACSS are in need of representatives. Jeff has names of people who are interested in becoming involved and council will vote to approve placements.  Jeff has stated that he would rather not have current council members act as representatives but SAEC members can act as liaisons between committees and the council.

SHIFT RECOGNITION AND COMPENSATION COMMITTEE

At Marty Martin's directive, the Shift Recognition and Compensation Committee will be rebooted with staff participation expected.

UNITED WAY CAMPAIGN AND SERVICE - CARES VOLUNTEERS UPDATE

Molly Ayers has confirmed that she will be leaving Gonzaga in the coming months and her position will need to be filled on the council. In her absence the United Way Campaign and CARES volunteer program will need leadership as well.

UPDATE DONATIONS FOR 125TH AND 100TH

Jeff is waiting to hear back about what Staff Assembly donations to the 125th or the Law School's 100th anniversary celebrations would be used for before committing any funds.

UPDATE ON SA GIFTS FOR 2013-2014

At the next committee meeting, examples of possibilities for future Staff Assembly Anniversary Gifts will be shown in the hopes that the committee can provide input on the 2013-2014 gift decision.
