STAFF ASSEMBLY GIFTS

Rian Emmerson talked about what gifts her company can do for the giveaways. Ideas were something that would be sustainable and not something that is not useful.  Thoughts and ideas were small portfolio, change counter for the car or possibly a mini portfolio for the car. Budget for this is about $10 for the anniversary gifts.  Color of portfolio would be navy.  Rian will send over examples to Jeff and then he will forward out to the executive council.  Nice blanket will be for retiring employees after 25+ years.  Jeff will go see blanket where ID pictures are taken so he has an idea of what we will be looking for.

FALL OPEN MEETING

October 24th is the date for the Fall Open Meeting.  We will have two cabinet members speaking for 30 minutes each.  They will be asked to talk about tradition and transformation, how they see staff fitting and where they see Gonzaga going in the future.  Marty Martin is not able to attend the meeting so Jeff has asked if AVP Patricia Killen can be our guest, and Joe Poss – VP UR will be there as well.

United Way wants to give their talk at the meeting and start the annual UW campaign.

Beth and Jeff have not been able to do the inventory of gifts but know that we are out of blankets.

President’s office update on gifts – They give out plaques, clock, and paper weight for anniversary year gifts. ACTION:  Jeff will talk with HR regarding list of employees working long term.  ACTION:  Allison will talk to Beth regarding the inventory of what we have left.

Tradition Item –Raymond Reyes will be asked by Carol Huston for him to speak at the fall open meeting (30 minutes) and she will advise him to speak on tradition and transformation.  Fr. Morris was asked how we should approach this subject.  Definitely the mission would be discussed.

Father Morris – wanted to meet everyone around the table so everyone introduced themselves and where they work at GU.  He has developed the “busy person retreat”; he also has a reading group.  He is interested in spiritual direction and wants staff to participate.  Jeff asked Fr. Morris about staff attending Oktoberfest.  He said he would talk with Fr. Case and advise Jeff.  Discussion about extending an invitation to the Jesuits to attend the Fall Open Meeting followed.  Father Morris stated that he is chaplain for the theatre group and encouraged staff to attend.  Also, it might be possible to market the reading group via website and/or staff-L.  ACTION:  add a “coming attractions” area on the website so that we can list the reading group and theatre. Fr. Morris contact information is phone: 6019; email is morris@gu.gonzaga.edu   Fr. Morris will be invited to several more meetings.

Regents – Carol Huston and Autumn Vargas are the applicants.  These names will be forwarded to Thayne for decision.

By-Laws – Handout was passed around.  Jeff asked everyone to browse these and send feedback to him by end of next week (October 12th).  Jeff, Mike Kelsey and Dave Rovick have done some work to revise the Bylaws. Would like to have the Bylaws work finished by the end of the year. Jeff will update the Staff Assembly at the 10/24 meeting. The goal in revising the Bylaws is to allow the council to do business and make necessary changes/adjustments when needed. Currently, the Bylaws have an unrealistic quorum requirement that does not allow for the Staff Assembly to operate, which in turn causes the SA to occasionally operate outside of the Bylaws. The goal of this council is to revise the Bylaws so that the Staff Assembly Executive Council can truly represent the greater staff. Additionally, officer terms will be extended to two years and the amendment process will be revised.

Mission nominations – Steve Allen is handling the nominations and is to take them to Connie Hickman. She will get the gift card and plaque when choices are made.  Allison and Carol had offered to help with this.  Jeff will check on this and then get back to them.

Next meeting – October 17th meeting is cancelled due to the Fall Open Meeting being held on October 24th ..  Next meeting will be November 7th in the 1898 Room.

Safe Harbor Decision from President – contraception issue, questions about STD counseling, the email was not clear.  The Executive Council is monitoring the situation; however the decision has been made to defer to the Trustees in the October meeting. More information to follow.

HR Candidates – Jeff will be on the committee for interviews of the 4 candidates for the HR VP.  He will report back when process is complete.

Meeting adjourned at 12:04 pm
